Nigeria’s Muslim states approve dialogue on Sharia

NIGERIA, 4 April 2000 (Newsroom) — Northern state governors in Nigeria have approved the formation of a committee of Muslims and Christians to dialogue on aspects of the controversial Sharia, or Islamic law, which was implemented by several states earlier this year.

More churches burned in Nigeria

Four churches were burned by Muslim youths on Monday in Demboa in the state of Borno in northeast Nigeria, police there confirm. Eight houses and shops owned by Christians and a police station were destroyed during the riot, which authorities said was started by Muslim youths who want to force the relocation of churches from the center of town to the outskirts.

The last Assembly of God church building in the nation of Vietnam was destroyed last week. Before 1975, the Assemblies of God church had ten church buildings in Vietnam. Nine were destroyed or confiscated by the government prior to the year 2000. The final church, in the coastal city of Vung Tau, was demolished last week.

Almost 150 schools have been destroyed. There are many reports of malaria and some cholera. When the floods started there was an initial report of 300 cases of malaria in one camp, but today it has jumped to 4,905. There could be an epidemic of malaria.
