(Worthy News) – A peaceful village that is home to both Christians and Muslims in Rambo, Burkina Faso, survived a massive attack by al-Qaeda-affiliated militants earlier this month because residents had prepared to defend their home against surprise terror attacks, Global Christian Relief (GCR) reports.

The decision to take defensive actions followed the massacre of 600 civilians in Barsalogho, Burkina Faso, by al-Qaeda-affiliated Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) in August.

On October 17, around 1,000 suspected Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin arrived at Rambo and attempted to carry out another massacre. However, together with the military, Rambo villagers were prepared. “Earlier that day, hundreds of residents gathered to clear trees and brush from the surrounding areas — a preventive measure against terrorist ambushes,” GCR reports. “ Within just an hour, the military had largely driven the militants back, securing Rambo and preventing a far worse outcome.”

In a statement to GCR, a local pastor said: “We believe it was the Lord’s intervention and the church’s prayers that kept the attack in Rambo from becoming like the one in Barsalogho. We are thankful to God that the military was here.”

Islamic jihadist militancy has increasingly eroded the renowned religious unity and cohesion of Burkina Faso: the country now ranks 20 on the Open Doors World Watch List 2024 of the top 50 countries where Christians are persecuted.

The impact of Islamic militant groups has remained steady over the last several years because of the ongoing political instability,” the Open Doors international Christian advocacy organization explains in a current website statement.
