(Worthy News) – In a bizarre new gesture of hostility, North Korea (DPRK) has sent some 900 balloons filled with garbage into the territory of its enemy South Korea since May 28, DW reports.

While officially known as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), isolated and impoverished North Korea is led by brutal, volatile, communist dictator Kim Yo Jong.

Pyongyang sent 600 balloons filled with excrement, cigarette butts and plastic overnight on Saturday alone, DW reports.

Pyongyang said the balloons are retaliation for balloons carrying anti-DPRK leaflets that have been sent into North Korean territory by South Korean activists.

Issuing emergency alerts for residents, the South Korean military said the balloons have been landing in Seoul and Gyeonggi.

“Our military is conducting surveillance and reconnaissance from the launch points of the balloons, tracking them through aerial reconnaissance, and collecting the fallen debris,
prioritizing public safety,” Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.

“We urge the public to avoid contact with the fallen waste balloons and report them to the nearest military unit or police station,” the Joint Chiefs added.

Pyongyang called the balloons “gifts of sincerity,” DW said. South Korea has warned there will be strong countermeasures unless its neighbor stops these “irrational” provocations.
