Hamas Tunnel Network Spanned Hundreds of Miles Under Gaza
by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Correspondent
(Worthy News) – The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that the tunnel network built by Hamas under the Gaza Strip is far more extensive than previously thought, spanning between 350 and 450 miles, significantly larger than the original estimate of 250 miles given in December.
Hamas extensively developed its tunnel network, with over 5,000 shafts already uncovered. The terrorist organization utilized its underground network utilizing them as military bases, protect its top officials, and facilitate troop movements around the Gaza Strip undetected.
The IDF have categorized the tunnels into two primary types: ‘commander tunnels’, which are deeper and equipped with more comforts, and ‘operative tunnels’, which are generally more rudimentary and shallower. The commander tunnels are designed for extended occupancy and are even outfitted with features like ceramic tiles. This intricate network of tunnels continues to pose a substantial challenge for Israeli forces involved in the conflict.
The IDF have warned that dismantling the tunnel network could take years, due to the necessity of thoroughly mapping the underground passages and ensuring they are clear of booby traps and hostages before they can be destroyed.
