(Worthy News) – Amid the worldwide pro-Palestine protests that have followed Hamas’ attack on Israeli civilians on October 7, hundreds of Islamist rioters stormed Makhachkala airport in Dagestan in Russia’s North Caucasus Sunday, looking for Jews whom they heard had arrived on a flight from Israel, DW reports.

Widely shared video footage, and Russian news reports, showed hundreds of young men shouting anti-semitic slogans and waving Palestinian flags as they broke through barriers and rushed out onto the runway looking for the plane which had landed from Tel Aviv, DW reports. Video footage shared on social media showed the men circling a plane at a standstill on the runway.

Russian aviation authority Rosaviatsia said the airport in Dagestan had to be closed temporarily and expected planes to be diverted to other airports while authorities and law enforcement dealt with the riot, DW said.

The government of Dagestan reported the same night that “the situation is under control. Law enforcement is working at the scene.” Sixty people were reportedly arrested following the riot.

“The situation is very difficult in Dagestan, Ovadya Isakov, a government representative of the local Jewish community, said in a statement to the Podyom news outlet.

“People from the community are afraid, they call, and I do not know what to advise. Is it worth leaving? Because Russia is not our salvation. There were pogroms in Russia too. It is unclear where to run.”

In a statement about the incident, Israel’s Foreign Ministry said: “The State of Israel views gravely attempts to harm Israelis citizens and Jews anywhere. Israel expects the Russian law enforcement authorities to safeguard all Israeli citizens and Jews, whoever they may be, and to take robust action against the rioters and against the unbridled incitement being directed at Jews and Israelis.”
