BUDAPEST (Worthy News) – A deadly heatwave is spreading across parts of southern Europe and north-west Africa, with potentially record-breaking temperatures in the coming days, meteorologists warn.

On Tuesday, a man in his forties died after collapsing in northern Italy, and more victims were expected.

Italian media said the 44-year-old worker was painting zebra crossing lines in the town of Lodi, near Milan, before he collapsed from the heat. He was taken to hospital, where he later died.

However, more suffering was expected as temperatures were due to surpass 40C (104F) in parts of Spain, France, Greece, Croatia, and Turkey, weather agencies warned.

In Italy, temperatures could reach as high as 48.8C (119.8F). A red alert warning has been issued for 10 cities, including Florence and Rome.

“We are facing an unbearable heatwave,” Italian politician Nicola Fratoianni said on the social network site Twitter.

The heatwave has led to concerns of a repeat of last year when authorities said more than 60,000 people died in Europe due to the heat. Europeans fear that this heatwave could cause many more deaths this summer.

Several climate scientists highlight the impact of rising temperatures on heat-related deaths, citing a significant increase in 2022, particularly during Spain’s record-breaking hot year.

Skeptics, including exists, say summer temperatures have been high throughout centuries.
