KYIV/BUDAPEST (Worthy News) – Backed by NATO military alliance weapons and perhaps international forces, Ukrainian troops began a counter-offensive in the south, several sources said.
Ukraine’s military said Tuesday that Ukrainian troops launched their long-awaited counter-offensive in the Russian-occupied Kherson region.
The country’s former president Petro Poroshenko also said that a “long-awaited” Ukrainian counteroffensive against Russian forces is underway in the south to retake Moscow-controlled territory. “This is the long-awaited counteroffensive operation. It was started today at 7:00 a.m. (local time) with shelling and missiles attack.”
He noted that this is the “first time since February 2022 when such an [concentration] of Ukrainian troops with western artillery, with western HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) and western missiles, was collected together for this counterattack.”
Moscow confirmed the offensive, but Russia’s defense ministry said Ukraine’s troops in the southern Mykolaiv and Kherson regions sustained significant casualties.
MORE KILLINGS REPORTED
The ministry added Ryan, the “Enemy’s offensive attempt failed miserably.” It was not possible to verify these claims independently.
The offensive came as Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine continued claiming lives, with two people being killed after Russian shelling hit residential areas of the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv, officials said Tuesday.
A woman died when a strike hit a family home directly next to a school, and both houses on the property were left in ruins, with large craters gouged out of the ground in front.
The owner of the home, Olexandr Shulga, said he grew up in the house and had lived there his entire life till his wife died at the scene.
Police, military officials, and Ukrainian war crimes prosecutors were at the site in a residential neighborhood of Mykolaiv.
