(Worthy News) – Following the US Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v Wade, a group of Democratic senators has introduced a bill that would utilize financial penalties and lawsuits to “crackdown” on pro-life crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) it claims “mislead women about reproductive healthcare,” Christian Headlines reports.

There are around 2,500 pro-life CPCs nationwide, offering pregnant women financial and material assistance, and free services including counseling, ultrasounds and parenting classes.

Introduced by Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bob Menendez, the Stop Anti-Abortion Disinformation Act provide for the Federal Trade Commission to establish rules preventing people “from advertising with the use of misleading statements related to the provision of abortion services.” Breaches of the rules could result in substantial fines and civil litigation.

The bill accuses CPCs of “routinely engaging in a variety of deceptive tactics,” including “making false claims” about the risks of abortion, CH reports.

CPCs “prevent people from accessing reproductive health care and intentionally delay access to time-sensitive abortion services,” the bill says.

In a statement, Warren said: It’s more important than ever to crack down on so-called ‘crisis pregnancy centers’ that mislead women about reproductive health care. I’m working in the Senate to stop these deceptive practices and ensure every American can access the abortion care they need.”

Supporters of the pro-life centers believe the bill would remove choice and resources from vulnerable women facing a crisis pregnancy.

“Crisis pregnancy centers give women real choice, offering them resources to choose to continue their pregnancy,” pro-life writer Bethany Mandel said in a statement. According to the Care Net organization, 1,100 of its affiliated CPCs provided more than $62 million in free services in 2018.
