(Worthy News) – The World Health Organization declined to label the coronavirus a pandemic as the number of cases reached 100,000 over the weekend and extended its reach to 90 countries.

With 3,400 deaths worldwide as a result of the virus, COVID-19 is so far less lethal than former outbreaks like SARS, MERS, and Ebola, yet has infected a far greater number of people.

“I think it’s pretty clear we’re in a pandemic and I don’t know why WHO is resisting that,” said Michael Osterholm of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota in response to WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus resisting the label.

Significant populations have been affected outside of China, where the virus began in Wuhan and caused nationwide quarantines, with Italy now registering at least 3,800 cases and 18 US states affected.
