US reinforcements deployed to Iraq following assault on US embassy Trump says engineered by Iran

(Worthy News) – One hundred marines were deployed to the US embassy in Iraq Tuesday under a “show of force” from two Apache helicopters, as Iraqi protestors assaulted the compound in retaliation for US strikes on Iran-backed forces that killed 25 militants.

The US ambassador to Iraq, Matt Tueller, and a few others were briefly evacuated by Iraqi security officials, but reports Tuesday afternoon pointed to their soon return, with US President Trump saying that no permanent evacuation was planned.

“To the those many millions of people in Iraq who want freedom and who don’t want to be dominated and controlled by Iran, this is your time!” Trump said Tuesday in defense of the strikes, claiming Iran was “orchestrating” protests against the embassy.

Defense Secretary Mark Esper called on the Iraqi government, which bristled from the US strikes in recent days, to fulfill its “international responsibility” to protect US assets in Iraq.
