Barak Still Letting Waqf Build on Temple Mount
Leading Israeli archaeologists are charging Prime Minister Ehud Barak with continuing to turn a blind eye to extensive construction activity on the Temple Mount by the Moslem Waqf, which is destroying valuable antiquites buried there and violating Israeli law.
According to ARUTZ-7, Dr. Eilat Mazar and a committee of other noted archaeologists have inquired of Israeli police why they have not intervened to stop renewed excavations on the Mount, and were told it was on orders from Barak himself. Mazar, whose committee is trying to prevent the destruction of ancient artifacts on Temple Mount, said yesterday that the Waqf’s work has continued there non-stop for a long time, but “over the last week and a half, the works have really taken a more intensive turn. Trucks are coming out loaded with pieces of the ruins – and all with Prime Minister Barak’s approval… We have tried to meet with Barak for months, but he simply ignores us.”
Mazar expressed concern that plans to build a grandiose mosque on the Temple Mount – the biggest one in the Middle East – have been revived. He noted that work was now going on next to the Eastern Gate, a full 200 meters north of Solomon’s Stables, where a permit to open a small “emergency exit” was illegally used to open a gaping hole for a “grand entrance” to the new underground Muslim prayer area.
