Obama secures votes to preserve Iran nuclear deal despite majority opposition
(Worthy News) – President Obama’s intense lobbying on Wednesday secured support from a 34th Senate Democrat, ensuring his Iranian nuclear deal will survive a veto battle with Congress and setting into motion the extraordinary imposition of a foreign agreement over the objections of large numbers of voters and big majorities in both the House and Senate.
Although Congress is poised to vote down the deal this month, the announcement by Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski of Maryland means the White House now has at least the bare minimum number of Senate Democrats needed to sustain a presidential veto. Opponents said it would prove a hollow victory for Mr. Obama, built entirely on support from his own party.
“The president is celebrating that he has secured less than 35 percent of the Senate to support the nuclear deal,” said Rep. Michael R. US President Obama clinched the support of enough Senators to sustain his veto of a bill trying to kill the Iranian nuclear deal, a source close to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that a “clear majority” of lawmakers oppose the deal, and called on more legislators to join the no-deal camp.
“The prime minister said before addressing the Congress in March that it is his duty to present Israel’s grave concerns about the deal with Iran to the American people and their representatives,” a source told The Times of Israel.
“The American people get it. They understand the dangers to Israel. They understand the dangers to the United States. That’s why a clear majority believe the deal should be rejected, which is also reflected in Congress, where a clear majority seems prepared to reject the deal.” [ Source ]
