KYIV/MOSCOW/BUDAPEST (Worthy News) – In a warning to Moscow, Ukraine’s president visited the area where his troops entered Russia. Yet Ukraine also suffers from deadly setbacks in the ongoing armed conflict. Volodymyr Zelenskyy was on his first visit to the Sumy region since his forces launched an offensive from there into Russian territory more than two weeks ago.

The president said he had met Oleksandr Syrskii, the army commander-in-chief this week to receive reports on the frontline situation.

The Ukrainian army’s surprise incursion into Russia’s Kursk region on August 6 saw it take control of dozens of settlements, forcing tens of thousands of civilians to flee and taking hundreds of prisoners captive.

Zelenskyy claimed Thursday they had taken control of another settlement in the Russian region of Kursk and taken more Russian prisoners of war whom he hopes to exchange for captured Ukrainians.

Earlier, Russia’s capital, Moscow, came under one of the most significant attacks by suspected Ukrainian drones since the start of the fighting in 2022.

However, Russian authorities said dozens of drones fired at Moscow and other areas were destroyed.

LOSING TERRITORY

At the same time, officials say Ukraine is losing territory too, in part due to poorly trained conscripts and overwhelming Russian firepower.

Authorities stressed that at least one person died and more than a dozen were injured in the latest Russian attacks on some 24 settlements in the Kherson area.

Russian forces are also moving towards Pokrovsk, a central logistics hub, that could give Moscow complete control over Ukraine’s Donetsk region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged Russia’s advancement and urged allies to fulfill their pledges of military support.

He said, “It is very important that our partners really fulfill their obligations—on each package, on all our agreements. This is fundamental for our defense,” adding that Ukrainian forces are closely observing the Russian army’s advance.

Zelenskyy hopes to see a quick rollout of a European Union plan to loan 50 billion dollars from frozen Russian assets to Kyiv. Earlier this year, the 27 EU member states agreed to use the interest earned on Russian central bank assets to help support Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
