(Worthy News) – The U.S. Department of Defense announced on Sunday that it has dispatched a nuclear-powered submarine, armed with over 150 missiles, to the Middle East, alongside a second aircraft carrier. This deployment is in response to escalating tensions in the region, following Iran’s vow to retaliate against Israel.

The Pentagon reported that U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Sunday. Austin reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to Israel’s defense during the call, specifically highlighting his recent order to deploy the guided-missile submarine USS Georgia to the Middle East.

The Georgia, an Ohio-class submarine, is conventionally armed and equipped to carry up to 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles, capable of striking targets on both land and sea from up to 1,000 miles away.

The Pentagon announced that Defense Secretary Austin has directed the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln to hasten its journey to the Middle East. The carrier left Guam on Thursday, following a four-day stay, and joined the Italian Cavour carrier strike group in the Western Pacific Ocean the next day.

According to a Pentagon statement, the USS Abraham Lincoln, equipped with about 60 aircraft including advanced stealthy F-35C fighter jets, will enhance the capabilities in the Middle East, complementing those of its sister ship, the USS Theodore Roosevelt, which is already stationed there.
