(Worthy News) – A newly Christian 19-year-old girl in Uganda was burned with a flat iron by her Muslim father after he learned she had left Islam, Morning Star News reports. Christianity is legal in Uganda but converts from Islam are vulnerable to violent attacks from Muslim extremist relatives if they choose to leave Islam for Jesus.
Naasike Maliyati of Nampologoma, Butaleja District put her faith in Christ on July 15, during an evangelistic crusade she attended with a friend while visiting her grandmother in Lwangoli, Busoba Sub-County, Mbale District, MSN reports.
“When they called people to give their lives to Christ, I also went and prayed to receive Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior,” Maliyati told MSN in a statement. “When I went back home, I told my sister that I had left Islam. She went and told our dad of my conversion to Christianity.”
When Maliyati, a student at Noor Islamic Institute in Mbale, went to a church service the following Sunday, she was later confronted by her attended a church service, and upon returning home found her father, Abdulrahim Kutosi, and her uncles, who were enraged.
“They tied me up, beat me, and finally my dad picked up a hot flat iron and hot water and burned me and shouted loudly that I was an embarrassment to the family,” Maliyati said. “I was burned for leaving Islam and converting to Christianity, as my father furiously continued shouting that I had shamed the family. He continued saying that even Allah is annoyed with me as the pain continued inside my body.”
Maliyati was then taken by motorcycle to the nearby river and left there. A passing Christian, Nicolas Ndobooli, rescued her. “I saw someone yelling for help and calling, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!’” Ndobooli told MSN. “Being a Christian, I decided to stop and took the risk and put her on my motorbike to the clinic,” Ndobooli said.
