US, UK, and France Veto Russian UNSC Resolution to Condemn Hamas’ Haniyeh’s Assassination

(Worthy News) – Russia proposed that the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) adopt a statement to condemn the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, but the proposal was blocked by the US, UK, and France.
During an emergency UNSC meeting requested by Iran after the early-morning assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, Iranian Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani declared, “The Security Council must take swift action to hold Israel accountable for this aggressive act.”
He added, “This should include considering sanctions and other necessary measures to prevent further violations and to demonstrate that the international community will not tolerate Israeli misconduct.”
At the emergency UNSC meeting, Iravani stated, “Russia’s proposed statement condemning Israel’s heinous act was blocked by the US, UK, and France.”
Israeli Deputy Ambassador Jonathan Miller declared at the UNSC meeting, “This operation conveys a clear message: we will protect ourselves and respond forcefully against those who cause us harm.” He also urged the council to impose new sanctions on Iran, highlighting its financial and military support for both Hamas and Hezbollah.
Council members urged restraint, and US envoy Robert Wood stated, “we have no independent confirmation as to Hamas’ claims regarding his death,” clarifying that the US was not involved in Haniyeh’s assassination. He also noted, “A broader war is neither imminent nor inevitable, although the opportunistic attacks by Iran and its network of terrorist proxies and partners across the region have repeatedly brought us closer to a regional conflict,” and affirmed Israel’s right to defend itself.
The United States designated Ismail Haniyeh, the recently assassinated Hamas leader, as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist. This designation was intended to limit his access to international financial systems and resources, reflecting the international community’s view of his involvement in planning and supporting acts of terrorism against the United States, Israel, and their allies.
