WASHINGTON (Worthy News) – U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris appeared a step closer to becoming the Democratic nominee for the next occupant of the White House on Tuesday after crucial Democrats rallied behind her.

Harris, 59, received a rapid flow of endorsements from top Democrats, including former House speaker Nancy Pelosi, following U.S. President Joe Biden’s abrupt decision not to seek re-election in November.

“I have full confidence she will lead us to victory in November,” Pelosi said in a statement of Harris, who also hails from the Bay Area.

The former speaker, who held that post from 2007 until 2011 and from 2017 until 2021, added: “My enthusiastic support for Kamala Harris for President is official, personal, and political.”

Pelosi seems to be a key behind-the-scenes figure as Democrats weigh what to do about the frail 81-year-old Biden’s determination to run again for U.S. president.

Though she never publicly called for the incumbent to stand aside, she did not appear very enthusiastic about him when asked to give her opinion about his candidacy in recent weeks.

PRIVATE QUESTIONS

Well-informed sources said she privately questioned whether Biden would weigh down other Democrats and compromise the party’s ability to regain control of the House.

Then, key Pelosi allies — notably the likely next California senator, Representative Adam Schiff — began calling for Biden to abandon his bid.

Their calls picked up steam and went public over the last week.

Harris and Pelosi reportedly spoke by phone on Sunday after Biden announced he would abandon his reelection bid.

Separately, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said he and Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer plan to meet with Harris “in short order” and will have more to say then.

He said Harris’s candidacy has “excited the country.”

However, polls show her still behind 78-year-old former U.S. President Donald J. Trump, who miraculously survived an assassination attempt last week when a bullet hit his ear.
