Nearly $300 Million in US Aid May Be in Taliban Control

(Worthy News) – According to a recent audit, the Biden Administration states it cannot determine whether $293 million in aid to Afghanistan has ended up in the hands of the Taliban.
The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, who conducted the audit, reported that “collectively, the State Department could not demonstrate compliance with its partner vetting requirements for awards that disbursed at least $293 million in Afghanistan.”
An audit of two State Department bureaus—the Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Bureau, and the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Bureau—found that they “could not demonstrate their compliance with partner vetting requirements due to an inability to provide supporting documentation for many of their respective awards.”
However, the report did not definitively state whether aid to Afghanistan was ending up in the hands of the Taliban. Nevertheless, given the Taliban’s takeover of the country, it is plausible that American aid could end up under their control.
“The State Department must identify the actual beneficiaries of this assistance to prevent it from being diverted to the Taliban or other sanctioned entities,” the report stated. It warned that “the Taliban may have exploited US humanitarian aid, including the establishment of institutions to divert funds to achieve their goals.”
Since the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, Washington has sent a total of $2.8 billion in humanitarian aid to the country.
However, Zabihullah Mujahid, the chief spokesperson for the Afghan Taliban, strongly refuted claims that the Taliban had embezzled any U.S. aid.

In November 2023, Worthy News reported that the Taliban had established fraudulent non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to embezzle hundreds of millions in U.S. humanitarian aid sent to Afghanistan following the 2021 military withdrawal.
Shortly after reporting the scandal, Worthy News was once again deplatformed by Facebook, with the social media company claiming that the story violated its community standards on dangerous individuals and organizations.
