(Worthy News) – The Palestinian Authority, which governs parts of the West Bank, has accused the Hamas terror group of hiding among Gaza civilians to protect itself in its ongoing war against Israel, the Times of Israel (TOI) reports.

The accusation was made by PA official Munir Al-Jaghoub on Saturday after an Israeli military operation aimed at targeting Hamas military chief Mohammad Deif and his aide resulted in the deaths and injuries of civilians surrounding them, TOI reports. Hamas stated that 90 civilians were killed and 300 wounded in the attack, although this is an unverified toll.

During an interview with the Saudi al-Arabiya outlet on Saturday, Al-Jaghoub said: “If Hamas wanted to fight face-to-face with Israel, it would’ve done so in areas where the army is located, and not in places where there are people. Hamas is actually hiding between the residents to protect and save itself.”

Hamas immediately retaliated by accusing the PA, its rival for governance of the Palestinian people, of siding with Israel, TOI reports. Calling on Fatah, the political party which leads the PA, to condemn Al-Jaghoub’s statement, Hamas spokesman Jihad Taha said in a statement: “You must cease promoting the false narratives of Israel and align with our people in their decisive and steadfast battle against barbaric attacks.”

Instead, PA President Mahmoud Abbas accused Hamas of bearing “legal, moral, and political responsibility” for the “continuation of the Israeli war of genocide in the Gaza Strip” by “escaping national unity and providing free pretexts to the occupation state,” TOI reports.
