(Worthy News) – Amid Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, Poland’s military Chief of Staff General Wieslaw Kukula has warned that his country must prepare its army for a “full-scale” conflict, Reuters reports.

Poland is bordered by seven countries, including not only Ukraine but also Russia and Russian-ally Belarus. A member of NATO and the European Union, Poland has stood with Western powers in support of Ukraine – and has seen its relations with Russia grow cold.

“Today, we need to prepare our forces for full-scale conflict, not an asymmetric-type conflict,” General Kukula told a press conference on Wednesday. “This forces us to find a good balance between the border mission and maintaining the intensity of training in the army,” he said.

During the same press conference, Polish defense minister Pawel Bejda stated that Poland will add 2,000 more troops to the 6,000 currently based on its eastern border with Russia and Belarus, Reuters reports. An additional rearguard of 9,000 troops will be on standby and able to mobilize at 48 hours’ notice, Bejda said.

Increasing its defense spending by 4% of its economic output, Poland has announced it is developing “East Shield,” a $2.5 billion program to strengthen its border with Russia and Belarus,” Reuters said.
