(Worthy News) – California’s Democratic-led Senate last week passed a controversial bill that would prohibit public school teachers and officials from notifying parents if trans-identifying K-12 school children ask to change their name or access programs designed for the opposite gender.

Known as the “SAFETY Act,” Assembly Bill 1955 passed on May 29 but is being re-referred to the Committee on [Health] before proceeding further to become state law.

California Democratic lawmakers contend the bill is necessary to protect the rights of LGBTQ+ youth. However, parental rights advocates assert this measure undermines parental authority and trust between gender-questioning children and their families.

Assembly Bill 1955 reads: “This bill would prohibit school districts, county offices of education, charter schools, and the state special schools, and a member of the governing board or body of those educational entities, from enacting or enforcing any policy, rule, or administrative regulation that requires an employee or a contractor to disclose any information related to a pupil’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression to any other person without the pupil’s consent unless otherwise required by law, as provided.”

“The bill would prohibit employees or contractors of those educational entities from being required to make such a disclosure unless otherwise required by law, as provided,” the proposal reads.
