PALMA, SPAIN (Worthy News) – A restaurant on the Spanish holiday island of Mallorca promoted its newly renovated rooftop terrace the day before it caved in late Thursday, killing at least four people.

More than a dozen people were also injured in the incident in Palma de Mallorca, the capital of Mallorca, police said Friday.

Medusa Beach Club announced on Wednesday that it had renovated its rooftop restaurant in a post on the social media platform Instagram, and Worthy News monitored it.

It published a picture of the terrace with a glass balcony looking over Palma’s beach with the caption, “Totally different, New rooftop.”

Investigators suggested that part of the structure of the rooftop terrace collapsed due to excess weight.

Eder García, Palma’s fire service chief, told reporters that the supporting structure of the terrace gave way and crashed down onto diners below.

SENEGALESE HERO

Among the four victims who died was Abdoulaye Diop, a Senegalese migrant working as a nightclub doorman who made headlines on the island in 2017 by saving a man drowning in the sea at Playa de Palma, local media recalled.

He is thought to have stopped off at Medusa Beach Club, on the beachfront promenade, after leaving the gym.

The other three victims are a 23-year-old Spanish woman who worked at the club and two German women in their 20s and 30s, police said.

Reports overnight suggested as many as ten people were feared trapped under the rubble as desperate rescue operations continued, but town hall officials in Palma confirmed the debris had been cleared with no one else stuck.

Yer concerns remained about at least seven people in hospital with “very serious injuries” and nine others described as “seriously injured,” said the Balearic Islands emergency service.
