GREENFIELD, USA (Worthy News) – Desperate residents and authorities searched for victims and survivors Wednesday after a deadly tornado devastated the town of Greenfield in the U.S. state of Iowa, killing and injuring numerous people.

The exact death toll wasn’t disclosed yet after the deadly twister smashed through Greenfield, turning huge areas into a wasteland of obliterated homes, splintered trees, and crumpled cars.

Greenfield, a town of 2,000 about 55 miles (88.5 kilometers) southwest of Des Moines,  appeared to have been ripped.

The tornado also crumpled massive power-producing wind turbines several miles (kilometers) outside the town, footage seen by Worthy News showed.

Greenfield resident Kimberly Ergish and her husband told reporters they dug through the debris field on Wednesday, which used to be their home.

They were searching for family photos and other things that could be salvaged, but there “wasn’t much left,” she noticed.

POLICE CONCERNED

Iowa State Patrol Sergeant Alex Dinkla told reporters that Greenfield had been “struck by a devastating tornado.”

He added, “Local, county, and state emergency responders quickly initiated search and rescue operations once the tornado passed through the area.”

The U.S. states of Nebraska, Illinois, and Wisconsin were also hit by tornados, heavy rain, and power cuts, officials said.

Mary Long rode out the storm inside her Greenfield business, saying: “I could hear this roaring, like the proverbial freight train, and then it was just done.”

The latest deadly tornado came just weeks after a person died from injuries in Iowa when a separate storm system hit the Midwest, local media reported.

At least four others, including a four-month-old baby, were killed when “dozens of tornadoes” ripped through the central U.S., causing severe damage, authorities said on April 29.

The deaths happened in the U.S. state of Oklahoma, where a state of emergency was declared in a dozen counties.
