(Worthy News) — On Tuesday, the U.K. Prime Minister announced that the nation will increase its defense spending to 2.5% of GDP by the end of the decade. Additionally, he pledged $620 million in military aid to Ukraine, including long-range missiles and four million rounds of ammunition.

UK’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called the defense spending increase the “biggest strengthening of our national defense for a generation.” Speaking in Poland alongside NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Sunak emphasized the urgency of the situation: “In a world that is the most dangerous it has been since the end of the Cold War, we cannot be complacent,” he said. “As our adversaries align, we must do more to defend our country, our interests and our values.”

On Tuesday morning, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to confirm the U.K.’s assistance and “assure him of the U.K.’s steadfast support for Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s brutal and expansionist ambitions,” according to a statement from Sunak’s office.

U.K. officials announced that their support package to Ukraine includes 400 vehicles, 60 boats, 1,600 munitions, and 4 million rounds of ammunition as Ukraine contends with Russian advances on the eastern front. The shipment will also feature British Storm Shadow long-range missiles, capable of striking targets up to 150 miles away, which have been effective in targeting Russian positions.

The announcement was made just hours before the U.S. Senate passed a bill, which President Biden is expected to sign, providing nearly $61 billion in aid to Ukraine. This marks a new round of support from the United States for the war-torn ally.
