SURABAYA, INDONESIA (Worthy News) – A strong earthquake shook Indonesia’s East Java province Friday, Christians in the area told Worthy News.

The magnitude 6.1 quake was felt around the provincial capital, Surabaya. “My son studies there, and they have fled the university,” Victoria, a home church organizer who uses that name, told Worthy News. Other residents left their homes.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, but it comes as the predominantly Muslim nation saw several quakes and other natural disasters, including volcano eruptions that killed several people.

The earthquake struck off the shore of Indonesia’s Java island, which includes East Java province, on Friday at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles), Indonesia’s geophysics agency (BKMG) said.

The epicenter was located 132 kilometers (82 miles) north of Tuban in East Java province, BMKG said.

The tremors were felt strongly in East Java, its capital Surabaya, and cities in neighboring provinces, Worthy News established.

The quake had no potential to trigger a tsunami, BMKG said, but residents were waiting outside their homes, fearing aftershocks.
