Senate Democrats Call On Biden To Recognize Palestinian State

(Worthy News)—Nineteen Democratic Senators have urged President Joe Biden, in a letter sent on Wednesday, to establish a “bold, public framework” for the United States to unilaterally acknowledge the establishment of a demilitarized Palestinian state, which would be administered by a reformed Palestinian Authority.
In the letter, spearheaded by Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), the senators assert, “Biden needs to ‘reignite U.S. leadership on a diplomatic solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.'”
“We call on you to publicly outline a path for the United States to recognize a nonmilitarized Palestinian state,” the letter stated.
The letter detailed proposed reforms for the Palestinian Authority, including enhancing democracy and governance through improvements in education, judicial, and security systems, alongside efforts to tackle corruption and incitement to violence.
Additionally, the reforms mandate that the Palestinian Authority, as the government of the West Bank and Gaza, must reaffirm its recognition of Israel’s statehood.
It also called for Palestinian government ministers and senior officials to commit to nonviolence, endorse a two-state solution featuring both Israeli and Palestinian states, and explicitly renounce Hamas and all forms of terrorism.
The senators stated, “The road to enduring peace in the region depends entirely on the two-state solution—the establishment of a Palestinian state, existing in concert with a regionally-integrated Israel,” emphasizing that the U.S. “must continue to take decisive action to bring about a two-state solution once and for all.”
Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE) spearheaded the letter along with signatures from Democrats: Sens.Tammy Baldwin (D-WI.), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Chris Coons (D-DE), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Martin Heinrich (D-NM.), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Ed Markey (D-MA), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Chris Murphy (D-CT), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Tina Smith (D-MN), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Raphael Warnock (D-GA), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Peter Welch (D-VT) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI).
