VALENCIA, SPAIN (Worthy News) – Spain plunged into three days of mourning after authorities in the Spanish city of Valencia said up to ten people were killed and 14 injured as fire engulfed a high-rise apartment complex.

Firefighters were seen rescuing people from balconies, using cranes to reach those trapped on high floors, after the blaze broke out late Thursday.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visited the scene and promised all possible aid to the city and its region on Friday.

Although the building was still sweltering, firefighters could enter the lower floors and begin searching for the missing people, officials said.

Firefighters and forensic authorities reportedly managed to recover nine bodies from the ruins of a 14-floor apartment complex, and at least one person remained missing.

There are fears that highly flammable cladding on the building’s facade may have helped the fire spread – as in the 2017 tragedy at London’s Grenfell Tower in which nearly 30 people died.

Yet Spanish authorities have so far refused to answer questions on the cause of the fire.

As people mourned, residents awaited answers while smoke could still be seen coming out from the top of the ravaged apartment blocks.
