US Bottled Water Contains Potentially Dangerous Nanoplastics, New Report Shows

(Worthy News) – While the US Food and Drugs Administration has said it is too early to raise the alarm over the issue, scientists at Columbia University have found that the average liter of bottled water contains over 240,000 potentially dangerous nanoplastics, DailyMail.com reports.
There has been increasing concern about the potential effect of nanoplastics on health, with the tiny molecules being linked to serious medical conditions including cancer and infertility.
In a statement, Professor Beizhan Yan who co-led the Colombia study said he recommends drinking tap water because of the nanoplastics found to be present in bottled water.
“In terms of microplastic levels, tap water is a good option to drink,” Yan said. “Other studies have found its microplastic level to be much lower than that in bottled water.”
On the other hand, Yan said, tap water may contain “other pollutants, such as heavy metals and black carbon, which may be less prevalent in bottled water.”
A spokesperson for the Food and Drug Administration told DailyMail.com there was not enough evidence for concern about bottled water. “[The FDA] ‘is not aware of scientific evidence that would support consumers being concerned about the potential level of microplastic or nanoplastic contamination in food, including bottled water,” the spokesperson said.
