Security Questions Raised After Car Plows Into President Biden’s Motorcade

WILMINGTON /WASHINGTON (Worthy News) – Questions were raised early Monday after a car hit a motorcade vehicle as U.S. president Joe Biden left his campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware, late Sunday.
Reporters traveling with the Bidens said the first lady had just said “Happy holidays” to the media and gotten into a presidential vehicle.
Moments after Biden responded to a question from journalists, a silver copper sedan with Delaware plates hit an SUV that appeared to be guarding the president’s motorcade.
Journalists heard a loud bang and saw Biden standing outside his car with a surprised expression on his face.
A video posted on X, formerly Twitter, by journalist Max Lewis shows Biden paused and looked over at the crash’s sound before being ushered into his vehicle.
While the president and first lady Jill Biden were unharmed, the incident raised questions about security arrangements. “An SUV in President Biden’s motorcade was hit by a vehicle as he was leaving his campaign headquarters in Delaware tonight,” Lewis wrote in the post.
“Secret service agents surrounded the car with guns drawn as Biden was ushered into his vehicle. You can hear the crash about 9 seconds in.”
SUSPECT HELD HANDS
The suspect held up his hands while the press was escorted back to their van, witnesses said.
U.S. Secret Service spokesperson Special Agent Steve Kopek said there “was no protective interest associated with this event” and that the president’s motorcade left without issue.
However, critics said Secret Service agents had responded slowly to the incident.
“An [sport utility vehicle] SUV in Biden’s motorcade was hit as he was leaving his campaign [headquarters] HQs in [Delaware] DE. Biden freezes at the sound. Secret Service, guns out, surround the car, but it takes a long time. Not good,” journalist Victoria Brownworth wrote in a post on social media.
The Secret Service, which is tasked with protecting the nation’s leaders and their families, has been the target of scrutiny following several incidents.
It emerged that agents deleted text messages were sent and received around the time of the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
That happened despite requests from Congress and federal investigators that they be preserved, prompting allegations of a cover-up.
MORE THREATS
And it was revealed that the Secret Service had identified a threat to then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi two days before the January 6 attack but did not pass it along to the Capitol Police until after the Capitol was stormed.
Questions about security on January 6, 2021, were also raised after it was reported that then-Vice President-elect Kamala Harris drove within several yards (meters) of a pipe bomb outside the Democratic National Committee headquarters on January 6.
The Secret Service had swept the interior of the building, the driveway, parking deck, and entrances and exits before her arrival but apparently missed the bomb.
Separately, there were security breaches overseas apparently not noticed by the Secret Service: Police launched an investigation in April after a document outlining details of Biden’s trip to Northern Ireland that month was found on the street by a member of the public.
The document appeared to outline police deployments for Biden’s visit, which began with events in Belfast to mark a quarter-century of the Good Friday Agreement that ended years of sectarian violence.
