(Worthy News) – The United States is one of more than 20 countries which issued a declaration of their aim to triple nuclear energy production to achieve net-zero carbon emissions and limit climate change by 2050, CNBC reports.
The Declaration to Triple Nuclear Energy was signed at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (COP28) which began on Nov. 30 and runs to Dec. 12.
Countries around the world are increasingly interested in harnessing nuclear power as a source of clean energy needed to support the growing use and importance of wind and solar power grids, CNBC notes.
Canada, France, Japan, and the United Kingdom are among the other major economies which signed the COP28 declaration, CNBC reports.
“Nuclear power that adheres to the highest standards of safety, sustainability, security, and non-proliferation has a key role to play in keeping 1.5 C within reach,” US climate envoy John Kerry said in a statement issued at the weekend during the COP28 conference in Dubai.
In a separate statement made at the COP28 conference on Friday, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, said: “Studies confirm that the goal of global net zero carbon emissions can only be reached by 2050 with swift, sustained and significant investment in nuclear energy.”
