House Approves Temporary Measure to Avert Government Shutdown
(Worthy News) – House Speaker Mike Johnson successfully introduced and passed his temporary spending measure to prevent a government shutdown, securing a wide margin with a 336-95 congressional vote on Tuesday.
The bill received support from 209 Democrats and 127 Republicans, with opposition from 93 Republicans and two Democrats.
In his first leadership challenge, Johnson successfully convinced lawmakers to adopt his unusual two-step plan. This approach establishes new shutdown deadlines in both January and February. The current government funding is scheduled to expire on Friday, November 17.
The measure now requires approval from both the Senate and the President. However, recent reports indicate that Senate Democrats are largely in favor of the House measure, and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has virtually guaranteed swift congressional approval this week, averting the risk of a government shutdown during the holidays.
The White House expressed readiness to sign the measure upon Congressional approval.
