(Worthy News) – Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khameini met with Ismail Haniyeh, leader of the Hamas Palestinian terror group in Tehran in recent days, Reuters reports.
Iranian state media confirmed the meeting in a report on Sunday. Although Hamas is supported by the Iranian Islamic dictatorship, and Iran has been described by the US as the biggest state sponsor of terrorism worldwide, Tehran has stated it was not involved in Hamas’ surprise October 7 massacre of Israeli civilians.
Hamas terrorists are fighting against Israel from the Gaza Strip, since Israel declared war on the enclave following last month’s devastating attack which left 1,400 mostly civilians dead. However, their leader Haniyeh has lived between Qatar and Turkey since 2019 and was able to travel to Iran amid the war.
In the recent meeting with Khameini, which was confirmed by Hamas, Haniyeh briefed the Ayatollah “on the latest developments in the Gaza Strip and the crimes of the Zionist regime in Gaza, as well as the developments in the West Bank,” Iranian state media reported.
“Ayatollah Khamenei praised the steadfastness and resilience of the people of Gaza and expressed strong regret over the crimes of the Zionist regime, supported directly by Washington and some Western countries,” Iran’s state TV said.
For his part, Khamenei reportedly “emphasized Tehran’s consistent policy of supporting the Palestinian resistance forces against the Zionist occupiers,” Reuters reports. The Iranian regime also threatened Israel with “harsh consequences” if it continues to bomb Gaza.
