LEWISTON, USA (Worthy News) – The gunman who opened fire on a bar and a bowling alley in the city of Lewiston in the northeastern U.S. state of Maine has been found dead after a massive manhunt, officials say.

The body of the 40-year-old Robert Card was discovered Friday, nearly two days after he killed 18 people and left 13 wounded, confirmed Maine Governor Janet Mills. “I’m breathing a sigh of relief tonight knowing that Robert Card is no longer a threat to anyone,” she said late Friday local time, referring to the gunman.

Mike Sauschuck, commissioner for the state’s Department of Public Safety, explained that Card’s body was located in Lisbon Falls near the Androscoggin River.

He is believed to have taken his own life, according to investigators. On Friday morning, it was revealed that a note had been found, but its content was not disclosed.

Governor Mills said she had notified U.S. President Joe Biden about the news and thanked law enforcement officials for their work.

President Biden issued a statement following news of Card’s death, calling it a “tragic two days” for Lewiston and the entire country.

‘BRAVE LAW ENFORCEMENT’

“Numerous brave law enforcement officers have worked around the clock to find this suspect and prevent the loss of more innocent lives – all while risking their own. They are the best of us,” Biden said.

“Tonight, we’re grateful that Lewiston and surrounding communities are safe after spending excruciating days hiding in their homes.”

However, Biden also criticized Republicans who have not been supporting his crusade for gun control in the country. “Americans should not have to live like this,” Biden said.

“I once again call on Republicans in Congress to fulfill their obligation to keep the American people safe. Until that day comes, I will continue to do everything in my power to end this gun violence epidemic. The Lewiston community – and all Americans – deserve nothing less,” the president added.

All 18 of the victims were officially named by authorities, and a moment’s silence was held at a press conference on Friday evening.

Photos of those slain were posted on a board behind their names. The victims ranged in age from 14 to 76 years old.
