JERUSALEM (Worthy News) – An Israeli soldier was killed and three other troops wounded as they entered the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip ahead of an expected massive ground offensive, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed Sunday.
The soldier was killed in Israel’s war “against Hamas terrorists” near Kissufim, a kibbutz in Israel’s northwestern Negev desert adjacent to the Gaza Strip, the military said.
They were attacked while entering several meters (yards) into Gaza by an anti-tank missile, the IDF explained.
They were on a mission to “eliminate terrorists” and search for missing individuals and human remains, according to Israel’s military.
“An IDF soldier was killed, one was moderately injured, and two were lightly injured as a result of an anti-tank missile launched toward an IDF tank and an engineering vehicle,” the IDF said.
“This occurred during a local raid carried out earlier today in the Gaza Strip, in the area of the Kibbutz Kissufim. This activity was part of the effort to dismantle terror infrastructure, clear the area of terrorists weapons, and locate missing persons and bodies,” the IDF added.
Its Hebrew-language website has a picture of a burning candle near fallen soldiers. The name of the killed soldier wasn’t immediately released.
The soldier’s family was notified, and the IDF “expresses its condolences and support to the affected families.”
Sunday’s attack highlighted fears that a ground offensive would be bloody as some 300,000 Israeli soldiers are messing near the border with Gaza along with tanks and artillery.
