WASHINGTON (Worthy News) – The United States stumbled into more political upheaval Friday as Jim Jordan, the Republican legislator from the state of Ohio, was out of the race for Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.
The beleaguered Republican rescinded his nomination after reportedly losing a secret ballot vote among fellow Republicans in a private conference Friday afternoon.
The vote tally was reportedly 122-86 against Jordan, according to sources familiar with the process.
With the nation heading in its 17th day without a speaker of the House the unprecedented situation meant the aid package U.S. President Joe Biden is requesting for wars in Israel and Ukraine can’t advance through the House.
Without a Speaker in place, the lower chamber can’t negotiate to avoid a government shutdown before the November 17 deadline.
After a third vote, House Republicans are no closer to ending their gridlock and infighting, commentators said.
Jordan faced intense opposition from 25
Republican lawmakers and those holdouts have not indicated they will budge. Despite Jordan losing two Speaker’s votes, Republicans nominated Jordan again for the speakership while Democrats nominated House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Acting Speaker Patrick McHenry told reporters that after a candidate forum and an internal vote to select a nominee, the “goal” is to hold a speaker election on the House floor next Tuesday.
