JERUSALEM (Worthy News) – Two Israeli police officers were wounded late Thursday in “a terrorist shooting” at a police station in Jerusalem, and the suspected attacker was killed, Israeli officials said.
An armed 20-year-old man from the city’s eastern sector “opened fire at police officers who were standing in front of the” Shalem police station near the Old City, police spokesman Dean Elsdunne said.
As the alleged gunman “attempted to flee the scene,” officers “managed to … successfully neutralize him [and] he was declared deceased at the scene”, Elsdunne added.
Witnesses saw what appeared to be a dead body outside the police station with dozens of officers and rescue workers close to the Damascus Gate entrance to the Old City.
Israel’s United Hatzalah volunteer medics provided initial treatment for the two officers, Israeli media said.
One of the officers was in serious condition while the other sustained minor injuries, police said citing medics.
POPULAR FRONT
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a Marxist-Leninist terrorist group, claimed responsibility for the attack, Ynetnews service reported. Worthy News wasn’t able to immediately confirm that report independently.
The gates to the Old City were subsequently closed, Worthy News learned.
Earlier residents in the towns in the Sdot Negev Regional Council area were given the “all clear” after being ordered earlier to shelter in place on Thursday afternoon.
The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) confirmed that the shelter order was issued after “a terrorist from Gaza” was attempting to infiltrate near Kissufim, a kibbutz in Israel’s northwestern Negev desert.
“The terrorist was shot and killed,” The Jerusalem Post quoted the IDF as saying.
The attacks came as the Palestinian militant group Hamas, designated a terrorist organization by numerous countries, called for supporters worldwide to demonstrate against Israel.
