(Worthy News) – The US Ministry of Defense on Thursday announced it has approved the $3.5 billion sale of Israel’s Arrow 3 missile defense system to Germany, in what is Israel’s largest security deal ever, Ynet News reports. Senior officials in the German and Israeli defense ministries will be convening to ratify the deal.

Developed and produced by Israel’s Defense Research and Development Directorate and the US Missile Defense Agency (MDA), and led by Israel Aerospace Industries, the Arrow 3 system is the world’s most advanced anti-ballistic missile system, Ynet News reports.

The Arrow 3 system is designed to intercept ballistic missiles at long range and at high altitudes outside the atmosphere, Ynet News reports. The system operates on the basis of a direct physical hit on the target (hit-to-kill).

Berlin will pay a $600 million advance payment so that work on the project can begin immediately, Ynet News said. The details of the contract have been agreed between the German and Israeli defense ministries and will be submitted to the German government and legislature for approval. The contract is expected to be finalized in November.

In a statement about the deal, Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said: “In the eyes of every Jew, there is a special significance to the fact that Germany is relying on the State of Israel for its defense.”
