ABUJA, NIGERIA (Worthy News) – Suspected Islamic gunmen have abducted a Catholic priest in northwest Nigeria, his church said after several other abductions and deadly attacks.
Jeremiah Yakubu, the parish priest of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in the town of Karku in the Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, was kidnapped from the parish rectory late Friday, church officials said.
He was abducted in the parish rectory in Kauru at about late Sunday, according to investigators.
The Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan in Kaduna State called for “intense prayer for the quick and safe release of the victim from his abductors.” It also urged the parishioners to refrain from taking laws into their hands.
The church added that it “will use all legitimate means to ensure the quick return of the kidnapped Reverend Father.”
The latest kidnapping came after suspected Islamic gunmen kidnapped at least 40 worshippers during a service at the Bege Baptist Church in the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Additionally, dozens of people, including likely Christians, have been killed recently. Nigeria is known as one of the most violent nations for Christians. Over the past two decades, more than 50,000 Christians were killed by Islamic groups, according to rights investigators.
