US and Israel outraged as Iran elected rapporteur to UN international security committee, “UN has reached a new low”

(Worthy News) – Prompting outrage from Israel and the United States, Iran was last week elected to two leadership roles in the United Nations, including as rapporteur to the committee responsible for disarmament and international security, Algemeiner reports. The second position to which Iran was elected on Thursday last week is that of a Vice President of the UN General Assembly.
In a statement about Iran’s election to the committee on disarmament and security, US Alternative Representative for Special Political Affairs Ambassador Robert Wood said not only was Iran unfit to serve as the committee’s rapporteur but that the committee’s purpose is to “address the very security problems that Tehran itself perpetuates.”
Citing Iran’s support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, its nuclear programs and its export of violence, death and destruction to other countries, Woods said: “It is absurd beyond contemplation that Iran would serve in a position of leadership on the General Assembly’s committee on disarmament and international security.”
Israel was the only other country to criticize Iran’s (uncontested) election to the UN positions, Algemeiner reports. In a Twitter post, Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan said: “The Ayatollah regime in Iran is a threat to its citizens, the Middle East. It murders its own people, funds global terror, and is galloping toward a nuclear weapon at unprecedented speed. This regime must be stopped and sanctioned and should never have a role in the UN system. This election shows that the UN has reached a new low.”
Iran will take on both leadership positions in New York City at the start of the 78th session of the General Assembly in September, Algemeiner said.
