(Worthy News) – A newly converted Christian in Uganda was severely beaten and rendered unconscious by Muslim extremists enraged that he refused to renounce Christ and return to Islam, Morning Star News (MSN) reports. Christianity is legal in Uganda but former Muslims who turn to Christ are vulnerable to violent attacks by extremist elements in their former Islamic communities.
On May 2, Shaquru Ndifuna , a 33 year-old former Islamic teacher and married father of three children, was attacked by four Muslim men who forced their way into his house in Kaliro Town Council, shouting that he had blasphemed Islam by becoming a Christian, MSN reports. Ndifuna put his faith in Christ in January during an open-air Gospel event in Namutumba.Prior to his conversion he had been a teacher at Noor Islamic Institute in Mayuge District.
The attack in Ndifuna’s home occurred right after leaders from the Noor Mosque interrogated him about his recent absence among them. “They questioned me about my absence as a teacher at Noor Mosque,” Ndifuna told MSN. “I tried to explain to them about my other commitments elsewhere. One of them mentioned about me having become a Christian, but I did not respond. Afterwards the three Muslim leaders left.”
Then, at around 7.30 pm that evening four Muslims intruded into his house, he said. “They forcefully entered the house, shouting about me having blasphemed the Islamic religion and trying to force me to confess that Jesus is not the Son of God, and that Allah is the only God to be worshiped and Muhammad is His prophet,” Ndifuna said. “I refused to renounce Jesus as the Son of God. They started beating me up.” Ndifuna was hospitalized, having suffered a deep cut on the right side of the forehead, a fracture in his right hand and a neck injury as the assailants tried to strangle him, MSN was told. His vision has been affected, and he has difficulty breathing.
“Please take care of my children, I am not sure whether I will survive,” Ndifuna told MSN at the hospital. “The Muslims who injured me were trying to force me to return to Islam, but I refused.”
