GREENWOOD, USA (Worthy News) – At least three people were fatally shot and two injured late Sunday after a gunman opened fire in a shopping mall in the U.S. state of Indiana before an armed “good Samaritan” stopped him, police said.
The man with a rifle and magazines of ammunition began firing in a food court of the Greenwood Park Mall in Greenwood city till a civilian shot and killed him, according to investigators.
Police Department Chief Jim Ison explained that four people were killed, including the gunman, and two injured.
It was the latest mass shooting after a series of similar incidents in recent weeks that fueled debates about the many weapons in the United States.
Local authorities did not indicate a motive for the shooting and didn’t
immediately identify the gunman, except as an adult male. “We experienced a mass shooting this evening at the Greenwood Park Mall,” Mayor Mark Myers said.
“The Greenwood Police Department is in control of the scene. I am in direct contact with the command post, and there is no further threat,” the mayor added.
Police and multiple agencies were reportedly working to clear the mall, about 15 miles (25 kilometers) south of Indianapolis, the state capital.
Ison recalled at a news conference on Sunday that the local emergency call center began to receive calls about the shooting in the food court around 6 p.m. local time.
He stressed that the shooting ended when an armed civilian stopped the gunman. “It appears that a good Samaritan that was armed observed the shooting in progress and shot the shooter.”
