Republican Looks As If He Will Win the Virginia Governor’s Race In Setback For Biden
By Stefan J. Bos, Chief International Correspondent Worthy News
(Worthy News) – Results show Republican Glenn Youngkin leading in the Virginia governor’s election, widely seen as a referendum on U.S. President Joe Biden.
Youngkin maintained the most votes in the race against former Democratic governor Terry McAuliffe in the southeastern state.
Despite President Biden winning the state by 10 percentage points just a year earlier, Democrats face the prospect of a massive blow as the night progresses.
The contest was the first significant test for the party since Biden’s election and a possible preview of what’s to come in next year’s congressional midterms.
It comes amid plummeting approval ratings for Biden, who has come under pressure over his chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan and economic difficulties.
Jobs and the economy were themes for voters in Virginia.
NEW YORK MAYOR
Elsewhere, New York was projected to have elected Democrat Eric Adams as the city’s second Black mayor. The former police officer defeated Republican Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels, the non-profit volunteer organization of unarmed crime prevention.
Also, in New York, Democrat Alvin Bragg was predicted to win the race for Manhattan district attorney. That put him in charge of the criminal investigation into former president Donald Trump and his business dealings.
In Boston, Michelle Wu was due to win the mayoral race and become the first Asian American mayor in the city’s history.
Wu, 36, served on the Boston City Council since 2014 and was president of the council from 2016 to 2018. She defeated Annissa Essaibi George, 47, an at-large member of the council.
In New Jersey, Republican Jack Ciatterelli took an early lead over Governor Phil Murphy, trying to become the first Democratic governor reelected in the Garden State in more than 40 years.
In other races, Minneapolis rejected a measure to revamp its police force, the first major electoral test of reform movement after George Floyd’s murder, The Washington Post outlet reported.
REPLACING POLICE?
City Question 2, as it was known, would have amended the Minneapolis charter to allow the police department to be replaced by a Department of Public Safety overseen by both the mayor and city council.
It’s an off-year for congressional elections, but three new members of Congress will be chosen in special elections.
In Ohio, Shontel Brown was projected to win the vote for that state’s 11th Congressional District.
Republican Mike Carey was expected to defeat Democrat Allison Russo and win a vacant U.S. House seat in the state’s 15th Congressional District.
Voters in Florida’s 20th Congressional District were choosing their nominees.
