Slovenia Police Crackdown On Protest Against Coronavirus Measures

(Worthy News) – Slovenian police have clashed with anti-government protestors opposing restrictive coronavirus measures in the small Alpine nation ahead of a European Union summit.
Footage seen by Worthy News suggested at least several thousand people rallied in Ljubljana, the capital, though some outlets claimed hundreds of demonstrators showed up.
The protesters carried banners reading “Stop Corona Fascism,” demanding equal rights for both vaccinated and those who are not.
Security forces fired tear gas and water cannon to end the protest while a protest movement leader was detained. Before he was arrested, protest leader Zoran Stevanovic demanded the suspension of all anti-coronavirus measures.
Slovenian authorities introduced strict requirements for using COVID-19 admission passes, including for going to work in all state-run firms. People must show that they are either fully vaccinated or that they have taken an expensive PCR test.
Authorities claim the measures are needed as nearly 4,600 people died of COVID-19 in the country of 2 million people. Just 48 percent of the population is fully vaccinated, a smaller share than many other EU nations.
Overseeing the coronavirus policies is Slovenia’s right-wing prime minister, Janez Jansa. He has been in power off and on since Slovenia proclaimed independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1990.
His nation is currently holding the rotating EU presidency.
