Biden proclaims June is Pride Month

(Worthy News) – US President Joe Biden has issued a proclamation accepting June as Pride Month in America, the Hill reports. The American LGBT community has been celebrating June as Pride Month since the Stonewall riots of June 1969.
Making the proclamation Tuesday, the president said his administration is committed to stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. “Pride is both a jubilant communal celebration of visibility and a personal celebration of self-worth and dignity,” Biden asserted. “This Pride Month, we recognize the valuable contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals across America, and we reaffirm our commitment to standing in solidarity with LGBTQ+ Americans in their ongoing struggle against discrimination and injustice,” the president said in his proclamation.
The president went on to refer to the high levels of violence against transgender people, and to what he described as “discriminatory” state laws affecting transgender access to medical care and competitive sports.
“While I am proud of the progress my Administration has made in advancing protections for the LGBTQ+ community, I will not rest until full equality for LGBTQ+ Americans is finally achieved and codified into law,” Biden said.
Under the Biden administration Pete Buttigieg became the first openly gay Cabinet secretary to be confirmed by the Senate, and Rachel Levine, assistant secretary in the Department of Health and Human Services, became the first transgender person to be confirmed by the Senate.
