Planned Parenthood files lawsuit against Texas ‘Sanctuary City for the Unborn

(Worthy News) –
Abortion provider Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas has filed suit requesting a district court to nullify a “Sanctuary City for the Unborn” ordinance that, from June 1, will make abortion illegal in the Texan city of Lubbock.
The Sanctuary City for the Unborn ordinance was approved by 62.5% of the 34,260 Lubbock voters, Lubbock Online said. Because of legal precedent, the ordinance can only be enforced privately, meaning that “any person, corporation, or entity” who facilitates or pays for abortions can face civil liability.
The Planned Parenthood lawsuit claims that in implementing the ordinance the Lubbock municipality has overstepped its authority and places an undue burden on women seeking an abortion. Filing suit in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas, Planned Parenthood argues that the ordinance violates women’s due process rights under the 14th Amendment, Lubbock Online said.
The city was served with the lawsuit on Tuesday and has three weeks to provide a response. In a statement, Lubbock officials said the municipality will “vigorously defend this ordinance and looks forward to presenting that defense in court.”
Lubbock is the largest US city to adopt a ‘sanctuary city for the unborn’ ordinance. Aside from other towns in Texas, cities in Utah and New Mexico have also declared themselves sanctuaries for the unborn.
