Israel conducts successful trials on upgraded Iron Dome
(Worthy News) – In what has been described as the latest step in the Middle East arms race, Israel’s Defense Ministry announced last month that it has conducted a series of successful trials on an upgraded version of the Iron Dome air defense system, the Jewish News Syndicate (JNS) reports.
Israel’s Missile Defense Organization and Israeli company Rafael, the prime contractor for the Iron Dome, have led the work in conducting live-fire trials on the latest version of the air defense system every few months, JNS reports. The trials were carried out in the south of Israel.
While the purpose of testing is to determine how the latest improvements to the Iron Dome function in practice, the Defense Ministry has given only a few details about the upgrades themselves.
In a statement, the Ministry said the trials had “demonstrated a significant upgrade of the system’s technological capabilities,” and that the “Iron Dome was tested in a range of complex scenarios and successfully intercepted and destroyed targets simulating existing and emerging threats, including the simultaneous interception of multiple UAVs [unmanned aerial vehicles], as well as a salvo of rockets and missiles.”
The upgraded version of the Iron Dome system will be delivered to the Israeli Air Force and Navy to “strengthen Israel’s multi-tier missile defense capabilities,” the Defense Ministry said.
