UN Security Council fail to agree joint declaration on Syria

(Worthy News) – The United Nations Security Council was unable to reach agreement on a joint declaration about the devastating war in Syria after yet another round of UN peace talks on Tuesday, i24News reports. It was hoped a new declaration would revive the grid-locked peace talks.
Although the UNSC’s monthly session is normally public, Tuesday’s meeting was kept private after Syrian Constitutional Committee talks in Geneva last month proved unfruitful.
Diplomats reportedly blamed Russia for this week’s failed negotiations, stating the Russians had made demands that were unacceptable to Western countries. In a statement to AFP, one diplomat explained: “The Russians are asking too much.”
Another diplomat said Syria’s Constitutional committee had not achieved anything: the committee was established in 2019 to modify Syria’s 2012 constitution, which sets out the organization of elections under UN supervision. This second diplomat added that the Assad regime had deployed “delay tactics,” i24News said.
A great many UN talks and meetings have been convened to try to resolve the bloody, crushing Syrian war. The Western nations were unanimous in expressing disappointment at the “failure” of the latest peace talks, i24News reports.
Notably, Russia and Turkey have been holding parallel negotiations about the Syrian crisis in recent years, i24News said.
