(Worthy News) – Donald J. Trump’s political fate was in the hands of Republican senators Monday as the House sent an article of impeachment against the former U.S. President.
Nine House managers walked across the Capitol to inform the Senate that they were ready to prosecute Mr. Trump for “incitement of insurrection.” The charge came after the former president allegedly encouraged a violent mob to storm the Capitol earlier this month, charges he denies.
It was the second time in just over a year that Trump faced an impeachment trial, but most of the 50 Republican senators appeared unwilling to convict him.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, an outspoken anti-Trump Democrat, claimed the impeachment trial could heal the nation by bringing real accountability.
But Republican Senator John Cornyn wondered if Congress starts holding impeachment trials of former officials, what’s next: “Could we go back and try President Obama?”
Besides, he suggested, Trump has already been held to account. “One way in our system you get punished is losing an election.”
There were also legal concerns. Besides, senators are wary of upsetting the former president’s millions of followers, who are their voters. The proceedings began amid tight security at the Capitol.
Thousands of U.S. National Guard troops mobilized in Washington for the presidential inauguration will remain in place through mid-March due to ongoing threats, Pentagon officials said Monday.
There were at least 25,000 troops in town during the inauguration of Joe Biden as the 46th president of the United States.
Thousands will remain in place through mid-March due to ongoing unspecified threats, Pentagon officials confirmed Monday.
