Biden dismantles 1776 Commission and deletes its final report

(Worthy News) – US President Joe Biden has dismantled the Trump Administration’s 1776 Commission and has deleted the final report it released two days before the end of Mr. Trump’s presidential term. While the stated aim of the 1776 Commission’s report was to give future generations an understanding of US founding principles, and encourage citizens to take pride in their country, critics say the report excuses America’s history of slavery and undermines the legacy of the civil rights movement.
Comprising numerous conservative educators, the multi-racial 1776 Commission had been asked by Mr. Trump to produce a response to the New York Times’ 1619 Project. Developed by the New York Times, the 1619 Project is an ongoing long-form journalism project which seeks to reframe America’s history by placing slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the center of the United States’ national narrative. Controversial itself, the Project has been criticized by a number of historians who have expressed “strong reservations,” about it, have requested factual corrections, and have accused the authors of a “displacement of historical understanding by ideology.”
Mr. Trump’s Commission released its final report on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the January 18 national holiday which honors the most visible leader of the mid-20th century American civil rights movement. A key finding of the 1776 Commission as stated in the report is that progressives have a “false understanding of rights” and have “rejected the self-evident truth of the Declaration that all men are created equal.” Turning to America’s political left wing, the report said progressives have designed a “shadow government” that “never faces elections and today operates largely without checks and balances.” The report also criticized the Civil Rights movement saying it “was almost immediately turned to programs that ran counter to the lofty ideals of the founders.”
In a statement about the report, executive director of the American Historical Association James Grossman said the report was a cynical work of politics. “This report skillfully weaves together myths, distortions, deliberate silences, and both blatant and subtle misreading of evidence to create a narrative and an argument that few respectable professional historians, even across a wide interpretive spectrum, would consider plausible, never mind convincing,” Grossman said. The report has now been removed from the White House website.
