(Worthy News) – At least four people, including a female Air Force veteran, died as crowds angered over alleged election fraud stormed the U.S. Capitol, officials said.
Washington D.C.’s police chief Robert J. Contee said some 52 people were detained in the deadly confrontation with crowds claiming to be supporters of President Donald J. Trump.
Contee also told reporters that two pipe bombs were recovered from the headquarters of the Republican and Democratic national committees. Additionally, a cooler was found from a vehicle on U.S. Capitol grounds that contained Molotov cocktails, the police chief explained.
Ashli Babbit San Diego, California, a 14-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force was among those killed. She was struck by a bullet after entering the legislative complex with rioters, video footage showed. Babbit soon succumbed to her injuries.
Three other people also died on Wednesday because of medical emergencies, Contee said, amid reports they were trampled by the crowd.
At least 14 police officers were injured – two of whom remain hospitalized, he added.
The riots began after thousands of supporters of President Donald Trump rallied to stop Congress from certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s election victory.
It came after Trump claimed “massive fraud“ had occurred during and ahead of the November 4 presidential, charges critics strongly deny. Despite the controversy, both chambers of the U.S. Congress were due to verify Democrat Joe Biden’s victory. If confirmed, the 78-year-old Biden will become the 46th president of the United States.
